Linear Temporal Logic and Linear Dynamic Logic on Finite Traces

چکیده
In this paper we look into the assumption of interpreting LTL over finite traces. In particular we show that LTLf , i.e., LTL under this assumption, is less expressive than what might appear at first sight, and that at essentially no computational cost one can make a significant increase in expressiveness while maintaining the same intuitiveness of LTLf interpreted over finite traces. Indeed, we propose a logic, LDLf for Linear Dynamic Logic over finite traces, which borrows the syntax from Propositional Dynamic Logic (PDL), but is interpreted over finite traces. Satisfiability, validity and logical implication (as well as model checking) for LDLf are PSPACE-complete as for LTLf (and LTL).

Completeness for Logics on Finite Traces
Temporal logics over finite traces are not the same as temporal logics over potentially infinite traces. We propose that existing methods for proving deductive completeness for infinite-trace logics are effective on their finite counterparts. To adapt proofs for infinite-trace logics, we “inject” finiteness: that is, we alter the proof structure to ensure that models are finite. As evidence for...
متن کاملRuntime verification revisited
In this paper, we address a typical obstacle in runtime verification of linear temporal logic (LTL) formulae: standard models of linear temporal logic are infinite traces, whereas run-time verification has to deal with only finite system behaviours. This problem is usually addressed by defining an LTL semantics for finite traces, which, however, does usually not fit well to the infinite trace s...
متن کاملDeciding LTL over Mazurkiewicz Traces
Linear time temporal logic (LTL) has become a well established tool for specifying the dynamic behaviour of reactive systems with an interleaving semantics, and the automata-theoretic approach has proven to be a very useful mechanism for performing automatic verification in this setting. Especially alternating automata turned out to be a powerful tool in constructing efficient yet simple to und...
متن کاملFinite-Trace Linear Temporal Logic: Coinductive Completeness
Linear temporal logic (LTL) is suitable not only for infinite-trace systems, but also for finite-trace systems. Indeed, LTL is frequently used as a trace specification formalism in runtime verification. The completeness of LTL with only infinite or with both infinite and finite traces has been extensively studied, but similar direct results for LTL with only finite traces are missing. This pape...
متن کاملA Linear Temporal Logic Model Checking Method over Finite Words with Correlated Transition Attributes
Temporal logic model checking techniques are applied, in a natural way, to the analysis of the set of finite traces composing a system log. The specific nature of such traces helps in adapting traditional techniques in order to extend their analysis capabilities. The paper presents an adaption of the classical Timed Propositional Temporal Logic to the case of finite words and considers relation...
